I'm going to start this blog with a question, you don't need to answer me in the comments just think about it:
Does the people around you understand why or how you love certain things (books, music, shows...) so much?
I know that people reading this blog love Harry Potter, Jo's creation is the reason we know each other, right? And with most of us, our parents/family/friends don't get it. But we also love other things as well.
We love Doctor Who to the point that we watch each episode at least twice in the week it came out, and we re-watch this or that episode every now and then, I think at least one of you readers [do you want a special name?] watches Torchwood, and I think I'm the only one that watches The Sarah Jane Adventures.
For me this spin-offs are like Tales of Beedle the Bard or Quidditch Through the Ages or Magic Beast and Where to find them, so I watch them. I don't think I would have seen the Martha spin off that was JUST an idea once.
Following with shows there is Being Human, Sherlock, Skins, ... do I only watch British shows? No, but this are the shows that I can only talk about with you interwebz friends, more on this later.
If we are talking about books, obviously Potter, but there is also John Green*, Maureen Johnson*, The Hunger Games trilogy, The Millennium series* and the books that Melissa used to talk about in her book club.
Then there are the movies we like, musicals and so on.
Where am I going with this?
Well the new/recently discovered shows that I love to watch, that make me think and enjoy the show are the shows that my family is NOT interested in watching, even if by some miracle BBC decides to air them here I can't watch because my mom get mad at me for watching them, stupid single TV with cable. So if I want to talk about them or watch them it has to be online which means I spend more time on the computer than with my family, who then get mad and then we start the circle again, see where I'm going.
With books the same thing happens, my family doesn't like to read, doesn't like me reading, and don't like spending money in my reading (I know! isn't that like REALLY wrong?!) and as a result they don't see why loving or hating a character is possible, why would you spend hours upon hours defending the character or author if that is the case that you love. Why when a movie is going to be made about it, you hope and pray for the right casting, that the parts that for you make the book what it is are shown there. And when you get mad because someone screw things up BIG TIME in the movie, and you get upset about it, they look at you weird and start complaining that you are weird and pretty much a pain.
With music, I guess that is not just with us, parents and siblings don't really have to get your music likings just kinda accept it. Musicals are like books for my family, they don't like theater, so we don't go and it is expensive for me to pay it for myself, so I rarely go and this makes me very sad.
Now there are shows that I do watch with my family, but I guess that because they are not ¨weird¨ like me or maybe they don't care enough about the show, they don't always remember what happened on the show. This makes ¨discussing¨ what happened or will happen on the show frustrating because I'm the only one that remembers it.
I think I'm the only one that reads Nicholas Sparks books, so I don't discuss them with anyone, I know he is not the type of reading a lot of people like, but for a personal reason I love Sparks, his books have a tendency to make me feel good and at home when I'm feeling low so I love him and will try not to talk about him, because I get upset when someone starts to talk bad about him.
Do you have a book, author, show,, movie that only you like? Or a certain thing that your family or friends can't understand why you like so much other than Potter?

This one too, 'cause it is one of my favorite Tony moments: She's thin, she's blond, she says 'WOW' a lot.
*I haven't read them all so no spoilers.

I don't think my family really *got* my obsessiveness either. I mean they got that I LOVED certain things and they knew I loved to read but it wasn't something that was normal in my family. Thankfully, though, even if they didn't get it they didn't try to stop me. Mom would ask about the books I was reading an let me go on and on when I was talking. They even let ne read at the dinner table and the family would always get me giftcard for bookstores.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool.
ReplyDeleteIn my case the people that always seemed interested in what I was reading and let me go on about it were my Literature and English teachers.
They always recomended me good books.
